Southside man arrested for burglary of food truck

cuffs-2

A Southside man is being charged in the burglary and theft at a food truck in Southside, according to Independence County Sheriff Shawn Stephens.

Darin Brewer, one of the deputies called to the scene by a 911 dispatch, said the food truck is known as the “Tony Shacheres Famous Creole Cuisine.”

Brewer said the call came in around 2:40 a.m., May 26. The deputy found that one of the buildings used in the business had been forcefully entered and some items apparently stolen.

A neighbor, whose apartment is located just behind the food truck, said he heard a loud crashing sound coming from the food truck. He told police he went to the location of the food truck and saw a silver pickup leaving the area and said he recognized the truck and its driver as one of his neighbors.

Deputies investigated and secured the scene and then went to the apartment complex and to the suspect’s — 22-year-old Chandler Scott Gillmore — apartment. Brewer said he noticed that lying in the back of Gillmore’s truck were power tools, a chainsaw, and a shop vacuum.  Dep. Brewer reported his commanding officer was called in to interview Gillmore.

After investigating the burglary, noting property was taken from the food truck, and the suspect being identified by an eyewitness, Gillmore was taken into custody. Possible charges include: felony commercial burglary and felony theft of property.

Sheriff Stephens said he expects charges to be filed today by the district’s prosecuting attorney.
