Pleasant Plains-area man busted after trying to hide firearm at traffic stop

cuffs-24

A Pleasant Plains-area man was arrested Saturday by Independence County Sheriff Shawn Stephens for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

On Saturday, Dec. 1, Stephens attempted to pull over a vehicle driven by Wayne A. Riley, 23. It took several minutes for the vehicle to pull over after the sheriff activated his emergency lights and siren.

After stopping, Riley was then asked by the sheriff why he took so long to pull over the vehicle. Riley told Stephens his passenger was taking a gun from the console and concealing it on her person so he (Riley) wouldn’t get in trouble, according to the official report.

Since Riley is a previously convicted felon, he is charged with: possession of a firearm by a certain person. Previously convicted felons cannot own or possess a firearm at any time. A violation is a felony. Riley was taken into custody and placed by Judge Chaney Taylor on a $5,000 bond.
