Here’s a recap of Lyon College men’s and women’s basketball action Tuesday against the Central Baptist Mustangs from Matt Jagodzinski, the sports information director at Lyon College:
No. 18 Scots defeat CBC In AMC Game Of The Week
For the second time in as many games, the 18th-ranked Lyon College women’s basketball team was featured in the American Midwest Conference’s (AMC) Game of the Week. After facing No. 2 Columbia College in their first AMC Game of the Week contest on Saturday, the Scots went up against a tough Central Baptist College (CBC) team on Tuesday night. The Scots came out victorious and defeated the Mustangs, 92-79, behind a 20-point performance by Samantha French. Lyon improved to 12-2 (8-1 AMC) with the win, while CBC fell to 10-3 (6-3 AMC).
Madison Riley gave the Scots their first lead of the game at 4-3 with a pair of free throws as it was all Lyon the rest of the quarter. French followed the free throws with a three-point play before Riley and Ali Tucker drilled back-to-back three-pointers to put the Scots up eight four minutes into the game. The Scots continued to pull away from the Mustangs as their lead grew to 17 at 26-9 following a jumper in the lane by Lizzie Allgood. CBC cut the Scots’ lead to 12 late in the quarter as the Mustangs ended the first period with a 7-2 run.
The Scots had a big second quarter as they outscored the Mustangs, 22-11, during the second period. A three-pointer by Kaleah Davis gave Lyon its largest lead of the game at 50-23 with 45 seconds left in the quarter as the Scots led, 50-27, at the half.
Lyon continued to hold a 20-plus point lead over CBC in the third quarter, but the Mustangs began to rally back in the fourth period. After Kory Westerman sank a three-pointer for the Mustangs with 7:45 left in the game, CBC used an 8-4 run to pull back within 13 points at 81-68. The Scots responded with a free throw by Katie Turner, followed by four straight points by French and two more by Alexis Moore to push their lead back up to 17 at 88-71 with just over two minutes left to play. The Mustangs attempted one final comeback but another jumper by Moore sealed the win for the Scots.
Turner recorded her first-career double-double for the Scots as she finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Tucker added 14 points, while Henderson chipped in 12 points. Alexis Augustus finished with a game-high 23 points to lead CBC.
The Scots will take to the road for their next two games as they will face Harris-Stowe on Thursday and end the brief road trip on Saturday at Lindenwood-Belleville.
Men’s basketball stuns No. 18 Mustangs, 55-46
The Lyon College men’s basketball team capped off its three-game homestand in a big way as the Scots pulled off the upset and defeated the 18th-ranked Central Baptist College (CBC) Mustangs, 55-46, on Tuesday night. The Scots held the Mustangs to nearly half of their season scoring average as CBC entered the game averaging over 86 points per game as a team. With the win, Lyon improved to 9-6 (4-4 American Midwest Conference), while CBC suffered just its third loss of the season as the Mustangs fell to 12-3 (5-3 AMC).
CBC took an early lead against the Scots after a layup each by Tyrone Alston and Victor Dukes. The Mustangs saw their lead grow to six points at 13-7 following a layup by Percell Washington with 10:22. The Scots responded with a 6-0 run after the layup by Washington with a jumper by Eric Moses and four straight points by Blake Bradshaw to knot the score at 13-13. The Mustangs quickly raced back out front before the Scots responded with another run of their own. Trailing 18-13 with 5:55 remaining in the first half, the Scots began to settle in offensively and took control of the game. Bradshaw sandwiched a pair of jumpers around a pair of free throws by Antanas Krimelis over the next two minutes that gave the Scots their first lead of the game at 19-18. Moses added another jumper before Ray Price drilled a three-pointer just before the end of the half to give the Scots a 24-19 advantage.
The Scots saw their lead grow to five points twice in the opening minutes of the second half before the Mustangs rallied back to tie the score at 30-30. The two teams would keep things close over the next four minutes as the score became tied three different times with two lead changes. Emir Sabic would break a 36-36 tie with a big three from the top of the key that opened up a 12-3 run for the Scots. The Scots converted their final four free throws of the game – two each from Sabic and Bradshaw – to seal the win.
Bradshaw had a big game for the Scots as he led all scorers with a game-high 20 points, while Sabic chipped in 10. Dukes led the Mustangs with 19 points to go along with 10 rebounds for a double-double.
“I thought this was a huge character win tonight,” said Lyon College head men’s basketball coach Chad Tapp on the victory. “Last week we did not play as well and had some things not go our way. We had to get a win tonight against a really good team regardless. I thought we had some really good minutes out of a lot of guys and we were much better defensively.”
The Scots will now prepare for two road contests to end the week. The Scots will travel to Harris-Stowe on Thursday before ending their brief road trip at Lindenwood-Belleville on Saturday.
