Lady Southerners, Lady Pioneers battle to till the end

For the second time in as many weeks the Lady Southerners and Lady Pioneers softball game came down to the final inning.
The Lady Pioneers won in the 8th inning at Southerner field two weeks ago 9-8 and the
Lady Southerners returned the favor at Pioneer field Monday night scoring five runs in the top of the seventh inning to win 5-2.
It was a scoreless duel for the first five innings as both pitchers had strong defenses behind them.
The Pioneers got on the board first in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Taylor Rush led off the inning with a single, followed by a single by Breanna Rae and a double by Katelyn Langston that plated two runs, giving the Pioneers a 2-0 lead with the Southerners down to their last at bat.
With one out in the seventh inning, Katie Dennison got a single, followed by the second out.
Down to their last out, Lundyn Foree singled and Lexie Dale singled home Katie Dennison, closing the lead to 2-1.
Shelby Warden then hit a three run home run on the first pitch of the at-bat to give the Southerners a 4-1.
A walk by Grace Lawellin, followed by a stolen base and a passed ball and a single by Blakeley Floyd plated Lawellin making the score 5-2.
The Pioneers went down in order in the seventh. Katie Dennison went all seven innings for the Southerners walking one and striking out one, picking up the win.
Katelyn Langston went all seven for the Pioneers, striking out six and walking five.
The Southerners improve to 10-5-1 on the season, 5-5 in conference play. The Pioneers fall to 14-6 overall and 6-5 in conference action
