A gas line cut by a construction crew yesterday in west Batesville presented the Batesville Fire Department with a volatile situation.

A crew from Batesville’s water construction department was attempting to clear obstructions in a sewer line between manholes around 12:45 Tuesday afternoon when a gas line to a Hawkins Street residence was cut, according to Batesville Fire Chief Brent Gleghorn. Six area houses were evacuated until crews from Centerpoint Energy determined there was no longer a danger.

After the gas line was repaired and the area made safe, the water department construction crew completed its work.
