A phone call scam is going around according to the  Independence County Sheriff’s Department.

Sheriff Shawn Stephens says county residents are getting phone calls stating the person is from the online company Amazon, and that money has been deposited into the person’s bank account by mistake. The caller then asks the person to go to Walmart, and purchase a cash card, so the money can be returned to “Amazon.”

Stephens says if you receive a call of this nature, he would recommend you first contact your bank, and check to see if any deposits have recently been made. In all probability, you will find out the phone call you received was a scam.

Citizens need to use caution if they proceed forward with anything of this nature.
