Stone County man charged with aggravated assault for beating girlfriend

A Stone County man is facing three felony charges after being accused of assaulting his girlfriend.

The affidavit of probable cause for arrest said Johnathan Gage Brothers (pictured), 22, is charged with three felonies and a Class A misdemeanor after an early morning incident on Monday, Aug. 5.

Heather Vaughn told authorities she was awake at her Mountain View residence and using her cell phone around 1 a.m. when Brothers, her boyfriend, punched her in the face and took the phone, according to the court information.

As the confrontation continued, authorities say Brothers committed aggravated assault on a household member by choking Vaughn, smashing her head into a concrete floor, and punching her in the face.

Brothers then kept Vaughn from leaving the residence or calling police, according to the affidavit. For that, Brothers is charged with false imprisonment.

The assault charge also included the accusation that Brothers choked Heather Vaughn numerous other times during the altercation. And he is charged with interfering with emergency communication in the first degree when he took Vaughn’s cell phone and kept it from her — including hiding it — in an attempt to keep her from calling 911 to contact police, according to authorities.

Since Brothers has been convicted of two previous felonies, police are asking the court to try him as a habitual offender, which would increase his penalty if he is found guilty on the charges.

In addition to being charged as a habitual offender in Stone County Circuit Court, Brothers faces counts of felony aggravated assault on a family or household member; felony false imprisonment in the first degree; and interference with emergency communication in the first degree (a misdemeanor).

Brothers bond was set at $30,000.
