The Melbourne Bearkatz struck early and often Friday night in a 52-14 defeat of the Rose Bud Ramblers.

Rose Bud took the ball to begin the game and took nearly four minutes off the clock before Eli Harrell picked off a pass to give the Katz their first possession of the night.

Harrell was on the receiving end of the first touchdown pass of the night, connecting with Gabe Lawrence to put Melbourne on the board.

It was all Katz in the first half, as Lawrence threw four touchdown passes to four different receivers before freshman Trey Wren connected with Carter Bray for a 71-yard score, the first touchdown at the senior high level for both players.

Freshman Bryson Hampton soon got in on the action, adding a 41-yard touchdown run of his own just before the half.

The Katz defense hoped for a shutout, but Rose Bud connected on a 47-yard run to get on the board, but Bearkat Kaleb Cruz returned the ensuing kickoff 55 yards to get the score right back.

The Ramblers scored as time expired to set the final score.

The Bearkatz hit the road next week to open the 3A state playoffs against the Centerpoint Knights.
