Independence County Sheriff Shawn Stephens said his department has been investigating two apparent thefts during the past 24 hours.

The sheriff said a Newport Road resident reported his 2016 Honda ATV had been stolen.

Apparently, the resident’s son had driven the ATV to another residence on Newport Road, Stephens said, where the ATV was left when the son departed the residence. Later in the day, the son was reported incarcerated in White County, so the father went to check on the ATV and discovered it was missing.

Authorities said the case is being investigated, and there is a suspect to be found and interviewed.

The ATV was entered into the National Crime Information Center.

The second theft occurred in the 1000 block of Camp Tahkodah Road, apparently on Monday night. The report by Sgt. Ernie Gillihan said someone entered a truck and stole a Savage .270 rifle. The case is under investigation.
