Lady Southerners storm back in the second half to win in overtime, 59-57

The Lady Southerners started out slow in the first half against the Brookland Lady Bearcats Friday night scoring only seven points in the first quarter and trailing 22-12 at halftime.

They fell behind by 17 in the third quarter before the shots started to fall and by the end of the third quarter had managed to trim the deficit to nine, 37-28.

The Lady Southerners got hot in the third behind a furious press defense outscoring Brookland 22-13 to force overtime.

Brett Gardner had seven of her team-leading 19 points in the extra period and freshman Kamie Jenkins got a huge rebound off a missed shot by Brookland as time expired and the Lady Southetnerd pulled out a 59-57 win.

Brett Gardner had 19 points, three assists. London Cuzzort earned 16 points, nine rebounds, three assists, and three steals; Reese Gardner had 12 points, five rebounds, and four steals, and Kamie Jenkins had 14 rebounds.

The Lady Southerners move to 18-4 overall and 10-1 in conference play.

The senior boys jumped out to a 14-12 lead at the end of one quarter against the Bearcats, but struggled to get shots to fall the rest of the game, and trailed 24-17 at the half.

The shooting woes continued in the second half scoring only seven points in the third as it seemed Brookland couldn’t miss and pulled away for a 52-34 win.

Trevor Longo led the Southerners with 10 points.
