An 18-year-old Newport man was killed Monday afternoon just before 1:30 in a two-vehicle accident south of Newark on Arkansas State Highway 69.

The Arkansas State Police preliminary fatality report said a 2012 Freightliner was traveling north on Highway 69 south of Newark when a 1997 Jeep driven by the victim, identified as Michael Matteson, 18, of Newport, crossed the centerline.

The Jeep struck the side of the 18-wheeler trailer and rear tandem wheels.

State police say Matteson is the 226th person to die on Arkansas highways this year. The investigating officer Cpl. Russell Brinsfield said the weather was cloudy and the roadway was dry at the time of the accident.
