Officers from the Newport Police Department, chasing two people allegedly involved in a theft at the local Walmart, were pelted by gunfire from a semi-automatic handgun.

The incident occurred Sunday, shortly after 7:30 p.m., when police were dispatched to the theft. Police began a chase when one suspect was spotted between the Cash Saver grocery store and O’Reilly’s Auto Parts. Authorities said while chasing that man, the second suspect opened fire on police using a semi-automatic handgun.

No one was injured, and the two suspects were captured and identified as Sergio Archuleta and Trevor Billingsley — the one who authorities allege had the semi-automatic handgun.

Both men have been identified as absconders from the Arkansas Department of Probation and Parole.

Both are in jail at Newport, awaiting their first appearance in court.
