Newark, Oil Trough area sees number of thefts over weekend

Independence County Sheriff Shawn Stephens and his department are investigating a string of thefts in the Newark and Oil Trough area over the weekend.

One theft involves a dozen John Deere tractor weights, as well as 12 tires and wheels from a tractor in a rice field from a farm near Newark. That was reported Friday, June 26.

On the same day, authorities were notified of the theft of a set of 15 John Deere tractor weights off one tractor and 14 off another tractor that were both in a shop in the Oil Trough area. The weights combined were valued at $4,000.

There was also another theft from another farm near Oil Trough, reported Sunday, June 28. The owner told authorities that someone stole the farm all-terrain vehicle and also took five spare power-unit batteries and two power-unit drive shafts. The value of the stolen property is estimated to be in excess of $5,000.
