Traffic stop leads to arrest of man for theft by receiving of an ATV

A 37-year-old male was charged Friday morning in Independence County Circuit Court with theft by receiving involving an ATV.

According to court information, Independence County Chief Deputy Sheriff Aaron Moody said he was patrolling Morgan Street in Newark on Friday night, June 19, when he spotted an ATV traveling on the roadway without a rear tail lamp.

After a check on the ATV through the Arkansas Crime Information Center, it was found the ATV had been stolen in Jackson County around May 5.

Chief Moody said the man who had been pulled over on the ATV, identified as Leslie Dean Roy Shutt, said he bought the ATV about seven months ago from a yard sale page on Facebook.

Moody said Shutt said he did not have any messages or anything else supporting the sale, but did say he paid $700 for it, according to the court info.

The chief said the average price of that make and model of an ATV is just over $3,000.

Shutt (pictured below in his booking photo from the Independence County Sheriff’s Department) was taken into custody and charged in Independence County Circuit Court with theft by receiving, a Class D felony. Shutt is also being charged as a habitual offender, having been previously convicted of four or more felonies. The court information did not indicate a bond amount on Shutt.
