Officers with the Izard County Sheriff’s Department teamed with the Arkansas State Police Friday to take a Sage, Ark. man into custody on charges of attempted capital murder.

The case stems from the Oct. 28, 2019 shooting ambush of Kyle Cantrell of Melbourne.

In a release from the Izard County Sheriff’s Department, authorities took Matthew P. Garner (pictured), 32, into custody at his residence in Sage.

Charges of attempted capital murder, a Class Y felony, and battery in the first degree, a Class B felony, were brought by Prosecuting Attorney Eric Hance of the 16th Judicial District after an extensive investigation.

Cantrell was shot three times from ambush in the early morning hours as he was leaving to go to work. Cantrell was the manager of the local Sonic, and Garner had been employed there before being dismissed by Cantrell, the release said.
