The Melbourne Bearkatz opened up the Class 3A state playoffs in style Friday night, handling business against the Cedarville Pirates by a score of 38-8.

The opening kickoff seemed to be the only thing that didn’t go the Bearkatz way, as a bad hop cost Melbourne their first possession.

However, after forcing a three and out, things started rolling, as Trey Wren connected with Ty Miller on an eight-yard touchdown strike.

The teams traded long possessions with no scoring for most of the second quarter, before the Katz scored again, setting the halftime lead at 14-0.

The Pirates couldn’t make the proper halftime adjustments, as the Melbourne defense continued to stifle their attempts, intercepting three passes on the night.

The third and fourth quarters were all Bearkatz, eventually getting the lead to enact the sportsmanship rule.

The Katz will travel to Prescott in the second round.
