Two killed, three injured in off-road vehicle accident in Independence County

Two Batesville women were killed and three people injured in an off-road vehicle accident Saturday night in Independence County.

According to the Arkansas State Police fatality report, a 2018 Polaris off-road vehicle driven by Samantha Townsend, 30, of Batesville, was traveling southbound on Kelly Road at a high rate of speed when Townsend lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a right-hand curve.

The UTV went off the roadway and struck a tree, killing Townsend and another passenger, identified as Misty Vazquez, 43, of Batesville.

Three other passengers in the vehicle were also injured and transported to White River Medical Center, and at least one of three was then transported to UAMS in Little Rock.

State police report the weather condition was cloudy and the road condition was dry at the time of the accident. The accident occurred around 10 p.m.
