The Scots lost their first game of the season, 70-65, at Williams Baptist

WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. – The 18th-ranked Lyon College women’s basketball team (7-1, 7-1 American Midwest Conference) had its season-opening winning streak snapped at seven games as the Scots suffered their first loss of the season, 70-65, at Williams Baptist (9-4, 6-2 AMC) on Thursday night. Paige Kelley (pictured) recorded her third double-double of the season as she finished with a game-high 24 points and 10 rebounds, while Jade Giron added 19 points and nine rebounds.

The Scots took an early 6-2 lead over the Lady Eagles following back-to-back buckets by Giron and Katie Turner as WBU knotted the score at 6-6 with 6:14 left in the first quarter. Lyon took a slim two-point lead two times over the next three minutes before WBU closed the quarter on a 6-0 run and led, 14-10, after the first period.

The Lady Eagles extended their lead to as many as 16 midway through the second quarter before the Scots cut the defict to five, 30-25, on another bucket by Giron. WBU pushed its lead back to double-digits and took a 38-27 lead over the Scots at the half.

The Scots chipped away in the opening minutes and pulled back within three, 40-37, on another score by Giron at the 5:49 mark. That would be as close as the Scots would get the rest of the quarter as WBU led, 55-46, after the third period.

Lyon attempted one final comeback and pulled back within three, 63-60, on a layup by Kelley, but the Lady Eagles held off the Scots in the final minutes from the charity stripe.

Turner also finished in double figures for the Scots with 14 points and seven rebounds.

The Scots will look to avenge their loss on Feb. 2 as they will host Williams Baptist in the second game of the home-and-home series at 5:30 p.m.
