Obituary: Virginia M. (Tubbs) Metzger

Mrs. Virginia M. (Tubbs) Metzger of Newport, Ark., departed this life on Friday, Feb. 12, 2021, at the age of 82. She was born June 10, 1938, in Oxford, Miss., the daughter of James Lenard and Naomi (Faust) Tubbs. She was a graduate of Taylor High School, and also attended the University of Mississippi.

On Feb. 2, 1958, Miss Virginia Tubbs was married to Mr. Rex Wayne Metzger, and together they spent 45 years building their lives and raising their four children.

Mrs. Metzger retired from the Arkansas Department of Finance Administration Revenue Department in Jackson County, after 25 years of service. She was an American Red Cross and American Heart Association volunteer, and an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Newport. Mrs. Metzger was a member of the Seekers Sunday School Class, the United Methodist Women, and served on the grounds committee.

She enjoyed bird watching, camping, and fishing. Mrs. Metzger had a love of gardening, and shared her skills with the Newport City Beautiful Commission. She especially loved time spent with her family, cooking for them, and sharing special times.

Mrs. Metzger was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Rex Wayne Metzger, Sr.; and her parents.

She is survived by two sons, Rex Wayne Metzger, Jr., and wife, Karen, of Newport, and Richard Alan Metzger of Newport; two daughters, Brenda Travis and husband, Freeman, of Newport, and Barbara Ann Hackney and husband, Michael, of Newport; three sisters, Erma Goodman of Oxford, Miss., Trixie Rogers and husband, Lynn, of Tupelo, Miss., and Debra Bryson of Oxford, Miss.; ten grandchildren, Keith Travis and wife, Danielle of Rogers, Kristin Rogers and husband, Aaron, of Newport, Rex Wayne “Trey” Metzger, III of Searcy, Tracey Renard and husband, Ryan, of Little Rock, Tiffany Wagster and husband, Greg, of Newport, Stephanie Conway and husband, Dennis, of Tupelo, William Hayden Metzger and Kerstie of Southside, Anna Hackney of Newport, Grace Elizabeth Metzger of Tuckerman, and John Metzger of Tuckerman; fourteen great-grandchildren; her caregivers and dear friends, Teresa Sexton and Nicole McCain; a host of nieces and nephews; and a lifetime of friends.

Friends may visit the funeral home, Saturday, Feb. 20, from 12:30 p.m. until 2 p.m. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. Saturday at Jackson’s Newport Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jeremy Pressgrove officiating.
