The Independence County Sheriff’s Department has busy over the last few days.

At Sulphur Rock, Wendell J. Dailey, 57, was arrested June 6 for allegedly leaving the scene of an accident involving property damage, disregarding a stop sign, careless driving, and DWI.

He is accused of striking a postal mailbox next to the Sulphur Rock Post Office building and then leaving the scene in his pickup truck. Dailey was found driving in the area and pulled over. In the incident report, Deputy Dalton Wallace said he could smell intoxicants coming from Dailey and gave him a series of short sobriety tests. Dailey was then taken to the Independence County Jail and cited for the four misdemeanors.

Also on June 6, Independence County Sheriff’s Deputy Frank Ramirez Jr. investigated a stolen automobile call. The police report said a 2016 red Chevrolet Camaro was reported stolen from a residence on Cottonwood Lane.

In the incident report, Ramirez said the owner said he couldn’t keep up with the payments on the vehicle, and he called the lien holder to repossess the vehicle. When a tow truck driver came to get the vehicle on Sunday afternoon, the Camaro was missing. The man said he assumed the car had already been picked up by the lien holder. The deputy entered the vehicle as stolen in the Arkansas Crime Information Center and a BOLO (Be on the Look Out) was sent to surrounding counties.

On June 4 at the Independence County Fair, Sheriff Shawn Stephens said he escorted a man, who was apparently being disruptive, to the front gate. The sheriff said the man, identified as Timothy Casper, 67, of Marion, Ark., would need to have someone take him home because he appeared to be intoxicated. Instead, Casper was seen getting into his vehicle and driving off, not turning on his lights until he had traveled a short distance, according to the incident report.

Sheriff Stephens caught up with the truck, which pulled over after traveling another mile or so. The sheriff gave Casper a series of field sobriety tests and then took him to the county jail, booking him on several charges including improper display of tags, operating a CMV while intoxicated, operating a vehicle without lights at night, and DWI. Casper was also given a criminal trespass warning for the fairgrounds property. His court date was set for July 14.

And, the Independence County Sheriff’s Office reported a woman who lives on Camp Tahkodah Road reported that a vehicle she owned and which had been wrecked, was stolen from her property. The woman said she had information that the person who took the car sold it to a man for $400, the incident report said. Authorities said that man lived on Community Drive. The vehicle was located, and the man who purchased it, was told by authorities to not move or do anything with the car until the sheriff’s department investigation is complete.
