Nicolai Mihai (pictured above) credits the skills he has developed through English as a Second Language courses at the University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville (UACCB) for successes in multiple areas of his life, including passing the naturalization test to become a United States citizen.

“When I became a citizen and had to test with immigration, I was better able to answer the questions because of my classes with UACCB and UA-Pulaski Tech for reading and writing,” Mihai said.

Originally from Romania, Mihai said learning English has benefitted his communications with his employer and coworkers as well as in his personal life such as at his church. “I am improving in reading and writing, but I cannot pronounce good. I am learning,” he said.

UACCB ESL instructor Elizabeth Taylor said, “Nicolai is a dedicated student that has continually shown progress in the three years he has been attending our classes. While Nicolai has lived in Arkansas for over 20 years, he is continually driven to improve his English skills. Not only has he worked on his language skills, but he is also dedicated to learning math through our Adult Basic Education program in hopes to attain a GED. His friendly personality and his enthusiasm in class helps create a welcoming atmosphere and encourages others to be more engaged in class.”

He encouraged others in need of improving their English skills to contact the faculty at UACCB. “Come to our school. They have a special program for people from different countries. They start a beginning class. They help in a lot of areas and help with communication, English and history, and math. The teachers are good to help me.”
