On Monday, Independence County Sheriff Shawn Stephens said his deputies responded to three domestic violence calls over the weekend. Stephens said an arrest was made in one of the cases, and the other two are under investigation for possible charges.

In other news from the sheriff’s department, a 61-year-old Independence County man was jailed on June 20 after he raced from the scene after being stopped by an officer. After a pursuit that saw the suspect’s vehicle hitting 100 mph, the man finally pulled over on Highway 167, northeast of Batesville — just past the Weaver Chapel Road turnoff.

The police report said the man apologized to Sheriff’s Deputy Dalton Wallace for fleeing, saying he had drunk four beers and wanted to get home.

He also told officers “weed” was in his vehicle. Deputies did find marijuana and a marijuana smoking device also with an open can of beer along with several cans unopened and located in multiple areas of the car.

The suspect was taken to jail and charged with seven misdemeanors including: DWI, fleeing, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, careless driving, refusal to submit to sobriety tests, and driving on a suspended driver’s license. He will be going to district court to answer the charges.

In another case, Deputy Bryon Hightower was called to the 2500 block of Batesville Boulevard on June 18 in reference to a man driving his vehicle on the property. Deputies found the man and also found he had Xanax bars and another pill, not identified, in his pockets. The man goes to district court on a charge of possession of a controlled substance, a misdemeanor.
