Investigators say they are still conducting witness interviews concerning a man who burned to death Tuesday night at a Neeley Street residence in Batesville.

Batesville Police Detective Sgt. Brenda Bittle said the Batesville Fire Department was called to the scene, and the police department was notified to assist.

Bittle said authorities found a 41-year-old male who had suffered extensive burns deceased at the scene.

The sergeant said a domestic verbal confrontation was apparently going on at the time, and the 52-year-old wife had started burning some marriage-related articles. Bittle said the man apparently doused himself in gasoline — which was the fuel that set the fire momentarily raging.

Bittle said the investigation did not turn up a fire igniter, such as a cigar or cigarette lighter.

Investigators did note that one theory is that the man may have gotten too close to the woman’s fire, and the gasoline fumes and liquid ignited.

Authorities said the man’s identity will not yet be released as the investigation into his death continues, and authorities are also notifying next of kin.
