Since the Hernando de Soto bridge at Memphis was closed in early May after the discovery of a cracked beam, the heavy traffic flow over the nearby I-55 bridge resulting from the closure has been adjusted to relieve some of the congestion and delays.

According to a June 25 article in CDL Life, information from the Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) shows when the bridge first closed, drivers using the detour route regularly experienced backups of an hour or more. And those delays also cost the trucking industry a whopping amount of money each day.

“But since ARDOT implemented a series of lane changes on June 9, those delays have been reduced to approximately 15 minutes. This reduction has cut the cost to the trucking industry down from approximately $2.4 million a day to $936,000 a day,” the CDL Life article says.

The bridge is tentatively set to re-open in late July or early August.
