LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson is pressing forward with efforts to allow schools to mandate face masks as the state’s COVID-19 cases continue to surge.

That’s despite heavy opposition from fellow Republicans. Hutchinson on Tuesday called the majority-GOP Legislature back into session to revise the law he signed in April prohibiting mask mandates by schools and other governmental entities.

The session will begin Wednesday and include a proposal to prevent the state from having to resume making supplemental unemployment benefits to thousands of residents.

Statistics from the Arkansas Department of Health on Tuesday show an additional 577 active cases in the state since Monday and 16 additional deaths. However, over 30,000 doses of vaccine were administered within the past 24 hours.
