The season opener was a battle of running games between the Southside Southerners and the Pocahontas Redskins Friday night with the Southerners coming up short on a late drive to fall, 20-14.
Both teams went scoreless in the opening period before Pocahontas got on the board with 10:36 to go in the second quarter with a four-yard touchdown run, to go up 7-0.
The Redskins doubled the lead with a 71-yard scoop and score off a fumble by the Southerners with 6:37 to go in the half.
A one-yard run by Brycen Duncan with 54 seconds left in the first half cut the lead to 14-7.
The Southerners got the ball to start the second half and tied the game with a 38-yard run from Seth Case with 8:59 to go in the third.
Both teams stalled on their next drive before Pocahontas scored with 49 seconds left in the third quarter to go up, 20-14.
Both teams had chances in the fourth but failed to convert, and the Southerners failed to convert on fourth down with under a minute left.
Pocahontas kneeled to run out the clock and seal the win.
The Southerners play at home next week against the Mayflower Eagles.
