Batesville School District Superintendent Dr. Michael Hester (pictured) told White River Now this morning that the school board has a lot to look at after a request for a millage increase to add needed classroom and cafeteria space suffered a defeat at the polls on Tuesday.

The request for more funding through a millage increase was voted down with 2,801 against and 981 for the issue.

Hester told White River Now’s Gary Bridgman the school board will now be looking to make budget cuts.

“This means that we will have a future that we’re stuck with versus a future that we wanted and tried to plan for,” Hester said. “The board will look at all of our options to cut and reduce and to try and find money because the foundation walls are still leaking and there’s still no room in the cafeteria. So we will have to try and begin to do this out of our own budget. It will be a future that will involve a lot of cuts and pulling back on resources and things that no one wanted to have to make. But we will have to look at those options and then do the timetable that we can afford to do on just our budget.”
