Two inmates at the Independence County Jail are facing felony charges after an incident Saturday, October 2, at the detention facility.

According to information from Independence County Circuit Court, inmate Marion Keith Payne, 50, apparently became frustrated with the computer tablet he used to communicate with his family and threw it onto the floor of the jail. The tablet then began to smoke, causing the jail staff to have to move several prisoners to the rec yard to clear the smoke from the facility, Payne’s arrest affidavit says.

While that was going on, another inmate, Aaron Matthew Burrow, 38, allegedly tried to escape the jail — without success, according to the court information. Authorities say Burrow damaged the rear jail door in his failed attempt.

Both men have been charged with a felony: impairing the operation of a vital public facility. In addition, both were charged with criminal mischief in the first degree, a Class A misdemeanor. They are also being charged as habitual offenders.
