The Humane Society of Independence County (HSIC) is helping with relief efforts after officials evacuated nearly 300 pets from an east Arkansas facility.

According to a release from the Bissell Pet Foundation, the pets were evacuated from egregious conditions in a large-scale animal cruelty case in West Helena. After the closure of the facility, Bissell Pet Foundation along with Animal Rescue Corps, Cabot Animal Services, Humane Society of Tulsa, Nashville Humane Society, and more safely executed the evacuation and care of the pets including emergency efforts, health testing, microchipping, and other necessary efforts for the welfare of the pets.

The Bissell Pet Foundation was asked by West Helena government officials to aid in the evacuation of the pets and get them to safe shelters and rescues across the country where they will eventually be adopted into loving homes.

The facility was shut down by West Helena government and law enforcement for animal cruelty charges.

As part of the relief efforts, the Humane Society of Independence County (HSIC) is taking in forty pets from the facility through ground transport. The pets were transferred to the HSIC shelter on Oct. 27 and are currently in the intake process.

With the addition of forty pets, HSIC is asking for volunteers, supplies, and medical fund donations.

“We want to provide the best care possible for these pets so that they can be adopted as soon as possible,” an HSIC representative said in the release. “While we certainly are short on space, we could not turn our back on a crisis that fits so closely with our mission. We hope that the community will rally to help us take care of these animals.”
