Obituary: Bertha Burgess

Bertha Aline (Ott) Burgess, a lifelong resident of the Elgin Community, departed this life on Sunday, Oct. 31, 2021, surrounded by her beautiful loving children, at the age of 94.

She was born Aug. 3, 1927, in Tuckerman, the daughter of Loy Zem, Sr, and Elsie Lee (Grizzle) Ott.

Burgess was a homemaker and caregiver for many people over the last 30 years. In her younger days, she enjoyed fishing with her sisters.

Burgess was famous for her cooking and enjoyed quilting, needlepoint, and sewing. She was an avid reader, who also loved watching the Arkansas Razorbacks play, especially basketball.

Burgess loved and cared for every baby that came through her family.

She was a faithful member of Temple Missionary Baptist Church at Bald Knob, where she was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary.

Burgess was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, C.M. Glynden Burgess; one son, Charles Wayne Burgess; one daughter, Judy Kay Burgess; one son-in-law, Cloys Warren, Sr.; three brothers, Loy Ott, Jr., Glenn Ott, and James A. “Buster” Ott; four sisters, Louise Pretty, Ruth Dickey, Hazel Lee Ott, and Ruby Lane; and her parents.

She is survived by five sons, Danny Burgess, and wife, Dianne of Tuckerman, Jerry Burgess and wife, Anna of Tuckerman, David Burgess and wife, Sue of Elgin, Roger Burgess and Michelle of Tuckerman, and Eugene Burgess and wife, Sandra of Judsonia; four daughters, Aline Holloway, and husband, Thornton of Judsonia, Margaret Warren of Alvin, Texas, Kathryn Rowlett of Tuckerman, and Brenda Ginardi and husband, Dan of Judsonia; 18 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; her special friend and caregiver, Carol Pool of Kensett; many nieces, nephews, and a lifetime of friends.

Friends may visit at the funeral home, Thursday, 5:00-7:00 p.m. Funeral services are 2:00 p.m. Friday at Jackson’s Funeral Home Chapel, with interment following at Cheshier Cemetery.

Those honored to serve as pallbearers are Joe Holloway, Cloys Warren, Jr., Anthony Burgess, Michael Burgess, Christopher Rowlett, Nathan Burgess, and Hunter Lancaster.

Honorary pallbearers include all her grandchildren.
