The Independence County Coroner for the past 11 years will not seek re-election.

Wesley Gay said in an email to White River Now’s Gary Bridgman on Friday that his full-time job as a flight paramedic has required him to depend heavily on deputy coroners.

“I feel that it is time to step away since I am not able to fully commit and serve the people of Independence County,” said Gay.

Gay said he is very appreciative to the people of Independence County for entrusting the work of the coroner’s office to his leadership.

“It has been a pleasure to serve Independence County and to work with the agencies involved with the coroner’s office,” he said.

Also on Friday, deputy coroner Mark Reeves announced in an email that he will be a candidate for the office of Independence County Coroner.

When Gay completes his term, he will have served 12 years in office.
