Mountain View ends season with loss to Melbourne

The Mountain View Yellowjacket 2021 football season came to an end Friday night with a 33-30 loss to the Melbourne Bearkatz.

Mountain View took their first lead of the game in the 3rd quarter on a 50-yard touchdown run by Elijah Carlton. Carlton would successfully convert on the 2 point conversion to take a 14-13 lead. Each team would score on their next possession, a 3-yard touchdown pass from Trey Wren to Carter Bray for Melbourne, and a 27-yard touchdown pass from Carlton to Dustin Irwin for Mountain View.

Mountain View was successful on their 2 point conversion for a 22-19 lead. Late in the third quarter, the Bearkatz took the lead for good on their next drive scoring on an 18-yard touchdown pass from Wren to Chayse Beene. The extra point was good by Fernando Ventura to give Melbourne a 26-22 lead. The Yellowjackets turned the ball over on their next possession that Melbourne recovered in the end zone to take a 33-22 lead.

Mountain View added a 3-yard touchdown run by Trampas Stubbs plus a successful 2 point conversion on a Carlton pass to Kenner Gray to cut the Bearkatz lead to 33-30, but the Melbourne offense was able to run out the clock to pick up the victory.

Both teams had 345 yards of total offense. Unofficially, Mountain View was led by Carlton with 25 carries for 200 yards and a rushing touchdown. He also passed for 97 yards and another score and had 12 tackles on defense. Irwin had 5 receptions for 108 yards and two touchdowns, he also had 11 tackles on defense. Wren rushed for 97 yards and passed for 162 and two touchdowns. Holden Hutchins rushed for 62 yards and two touchdowns.

Mountain View’s streak of 7 straight years of making state playoffs came to an end with an overall record of 5-5 and 1-4 in conference play. Melbourne improved to 6-3 overall and 3-2 in conference play. The Bearkatz will advance to the Class 3A State Playoffs next week, where they will be the 3 seed from the Class 3A-2 Conference and they will play Perryville.
