Southerners advance to second round of state playoffs

The Southside Southerners advanced to the second round of the 4A State Playoffs with a last-second 28-24 win over the Star City Bulldogs Friday night at Stewart Field in Southside.

The Southerners opened the game recovering the onside kick and scored on a 35-yard touchdown run by Jacob Dunne only 45 seconds into the first quarter and led 6-0 after the missed extra point.

Southside would go up 14-0 on a 25 yard run by Landen Haas with 7:19 to play to go in the first quarter.

Star City would answer with a 40-yard pass from Mason Taylor to Cole Branson, and at the end of the first quarter, the Southerners led 14-7. Star City did all the scoring in the second quarter with a 13-yard run from Taylor, and a 34-yard field goal by Andres Heredia gave the Bulldogs the halftime lead 17-14.

Neither team scored in the third and a 1-yard from Jacob Dunne gave the Southerners the lead in the 4th quarter 21-17. Star City answered right back with a 1-yard run from Taylor with 5:21 left to play in the game.

The Southerners had one final shot, and Landen Haas scored on a 37-yard run with :21 left in the game to give the Southerners the 28-24 win and move on to host Arkadelphia next Friday at Stewart field.
