A fire in west Batesville last week caused major damage to a residence and killed six pets.

Batesville Fire Chief Brent Gleghorn said the fire last Friday at the home in the 300 block of Broadwater Lane caused major damage to the house, but its residents managed to escape unharmed. The pets were mostly dogs and at least one rabbit, according to the chief.

Gleghorn told White River Now’s Gary Bridgman on Monday that it saddens him to report any deaths — human or animal.  The chief said there was heavy smoke and water damage to the residence.
