A Batesville man pulled over by a deputy from the Independence County Sheriff’s Department to check a suspicious license plate ended up being charged with three felonies.
According to the incident report, a 2011 Nissan Altima was pulled over on North Central Avenue in Independence County early Wednesday morning for the suspicious plate.
The report said during the check, the Altima’s driver, identified as Robert Eddie Walter, 39, of Batesville, was found to have an active absconder warrant for his arrest. He was taken into custody and transported to the Independence County Jail where he then allegedly told the arresting officer, Deputy Chris Stump, that he had a pipe in his sock. It was a glass smoking pipe, according to the report.
Stump reported when he got back to the sheriff’s office, he checked his vehicle for any contraband from his last arrest. That’s when, according to the report, the deputy found two bags under the back seat containing a white crystalline substance that was consistent with methamphetamine.
In addition to the initial charge of possession of drug paraphernalia, Walter was charged with two more felonies: possession of meth and tampering with evidence of a felony investigation.
