Scots defeat Drovers to advance in NAIA baseball opening round

SHREVEPORT, La. – The Lyon College Scots baseball team advanced to the semifinals of the NAIA Baseball Championships Opening Round tournament by defeating the University of Arts and Sciences Drovers (Oklahoma) 10-4 on Monday afternoon at a sweltering Pilot Field on the campus of LSU-Shreveport.

The Scots (37-20) had 10 hits in the game and starting pitcher Alan West threw no-hit baseball through five innings. The Drovers (35-14) were able to tack on single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, then hit a 2-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to close the gap on Lyon College.

West (10-3) only allowed four hits and three earned runs, while striking out four batters. Meanwhile, West was 2-for-6 with an RBI. Joe Weatherford was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI, Alec White was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and was hit by a pitch twice in the game and Derek Underwood also scored a run for the Scots

Aaron Hurd was 1-for-4 with a perfectly executed a drag bunt that scored a run. Jayden Cull was 1-for-2 with a run scored and two runs batted in, Chris Burrup scored a run, Chris Lara had a run batted in, Haydn Finley was 1-for-1 with two runs batted in, Kaden Doan was 1-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI and Logan Doody walked three times.

The Scots walked seven times in the game.

The scoring started in the top of the third inning when West doubled in Underwood for a 1-0 Scots lead.

In the fourth inning, Lara drew a walk and a passed ball that allowed White to score for a 2-0 Lyon College lead.

The Scots cracked open the game in the top of the fifth inning when Weatherford doubled through the left side to score Burrup. Cull hit a sacrifice fly to right field to bring in Weatherford, then Lara reached on a fielder’s choice that scored White for a 5-0 Lyon College lead.

In the top of the seventh, Cull walked with the bases loaded to bring in Weatherford, then Finley doubled to right-center to score Hurd, and White and Doan singled in Cull for a 9-2 lead.

In the top of the ninth, Strack reached first on an error that advanced Tristan Buschow to second and scored Doan for a 10-4 advantage for the Scots.

The Scots will face off against the Loyola Wolf Pack at 2:30 p.m. today.
