An area man, accused by Independence County authorities of attacking and beating a Newark man and leaving him with significant bruising of the head, face, and body, was arrested June 2 in Jackson County.

Authorities say the 60-year-old victim reported the man who allegedly attacked and beat him, Steven A. Poole, 48, of Newark, came to his house to talk and then became hostile, falsely accusing him of sexually assaulting his wife and daughter, and holding them against their will. The police say Poole held the victim to the floor, striking him several times causing injury with significant visible bruising.

Police say the two men have known each other for years, with Poole often working for the victim.

Authorities say after the attack, Poole left the scene before being arrested in Jackson County. The victim was taken to the hospital where he was treated for his injuries.

The affidavit of probable cause for arrest said Sheriff Shawn Stephens spoke with the wife of the suspect, and she provided that there is no truth to any of the accusations made by Poole.

Poole was taken into custody and charged in Independence County Circuit Court with second degree battery, a felony, and was placed on a $50,000 bond.
