Yellowjackets keep unbeaten record with win over Genoa Central

The Mountain View Yellowjackets used a strong defensive effort to remain unbeaten by beating the Genoa Central Dragons 30-12 on Friday night at Genoa Central High School.

The Yellowjackets turned the ball over on their opening possession giving the Dragons the ball inside their own five-yard line. Three plays later, the Mountain View defense tackled the Dragons in the end zone for a safety giving Mountain View an early 2-0 lead.

The Yellowjackets on their next possession scored on a 15-yard touchdown run by Trampas Stubbs. This touchdown was set up on a 24-yard pass play from Drew Shelton to Jack Newton. The two-point conversion was good on a run by Shelton giving Mountain View a 10-0 lead.

On the Dragons’ next possession, Shelton intercepted Garrett Hardin’s pass giving Mountain View the ball. The Yellowjackets proceeded to go on a four-play 55-yard drive, scoring on a seven-yard touchdown run by Levi Rorie to give Mountain View a 16-0 lead.

The Yellowjacket defense forced a Genoa Central punt on their next possession, giving Mountain View the ball at their own 43. Mountain View would go 57 yards on 10 plays scoring on a 10-yard touchdown run by Shelton to give the Yellowjackets a 22-0 lead.

The Dragons would add a touchdown before halftime and another to open the second half to cut the Yellowjackets’ lead to 22-12.

The Yellowjackets would put the game away in the fourth quarter with a five-yard touchdown run by Stubbs. The two-point conversion was good on a run by Stubbs for our final score as Mountain View wins 30-12.

Mountain View was led offensively by Shelton who rushed for 130 yards on 21 carries and one touchdown. He also passed for 41 yards. Rorie added 102 yards on 13 carries and a touchdown, and Stubbs followed with 87 yards on 11 carries and two touchdowns.

Defensively, Stubbs had 13 tackles, Landon Goins had 11 tackles, and Jace Tinkle had eight tackles.

Mountain View improved to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in conference play, while Genoa Central dropped to 3-1 on the season and 2-1 in conference play. Up next for the Yellowjackets they return home to host Marshall.
