Undefeated Yellowjackets advance to championship after win over Dragons

Friday night at Mountain View High School, the Mountain View Yellowjackets advanced to the championship game of the Club Division of the 8-man playoffs with a 34-18 victory over the Genoa Central Dragons.

The game was a rematch of the one played on Sept. 23, which Mountain View won 30-12.

Mountain View scored first, on the opening possession, going 69 yards on seven plays, scoring on a four-yard touchdown run by junior quarterback Drew Shelton to give Mountain View an early 6-0 lead. Genoa Central tied the game at 6-6 on a four-yard touchdown pass from Garrett Hardin to Connor Reed.

Late in the second quarter, the Dragons were driving, but the Yellowjackets’ Jack Newton intercepted a Hardin pass to give Mountain View the ball at the Genoa Central 11. The Yellowjackets proceeded to go 89 yards on nine plays, scoring on a two-yard touchdown run by Trampas Stubbs. The two point conversion was good on a pass from Stubbs to Kenner Gray to give Mountain View a 14-6 lead.

Genoa Central quickly answered four plays later scoring on two-yard touchdown run by Noah Brent. The two point conversion failed and Mountain View’s lead was 14-12.

Mountain View increased their lead before halftime on a 40-yard touchdown pass from Stubbs to Gray, to take a 20-12 lead into the halftime break.

Early in the third quarter, the Dragons closed the gap again scoring on a seven-yard touchdown run by Hardin. The two point conversion failed. Mountain View led 20-18 with 8:21 to go in the third quarter.

Mountain View answered with a 69-yard drive on their opening possession of the second half, as Stubbs scored on a four-yard touchdown run on fourth down to give the Yellowjackets a 26-18 lead.

Genoa Central threatened on their next possession, driving inside the Mountain View five-yard line, however the Yellowjackets defense forced a fumble that was recovered by Drew Isbell, giving Mountain View the ball back.

The Mountain View offense took over going on a 12-play, 97-yard drive scoring on a three-yard touchdown run by Shelton. Shelton also ran in the two point conversion giving Mountain View the final margin of victory 34-18.

Mountain View offense totaled 425 yards of total offense, led by Shelton who rushed for 133 yards on 19 carries and two rushing TDs. He also passed for 60 yards. Stubbs added 108 yards on the ground, 42 yards passing, 31 yards receiving, and three total touchdowns. Levi Rorie rushed for 82 yards, and Gray led the receiving group with 46 yards receiving and a touchdown.

Hardin led Genoa Central with 215 yards passing, 104 yards rushing, and two total touchdowns. Reed led with 104 receiving yards and one touchdown.

Defensively, Mountain View was led by Stubbs with 12 tackles, senior Landon Goins added 11 tackles, two sacks, and one forced fumble; Gray had eight tackles, and Jace Tinkle and Jesy Decker each added seven tackles. Newton had an interception and Isbell a fumble recovery.

Mountain View remained perfect on the season at 9-0 overall, while Genoa Central season comes to an end at 5-4.

Next week Mountain View will host Fountain Lake in the Club division Championship Game. It will be a rematch of the game on Oct. 14 that Mountain View won 30-27.
