The New York Times on Thursday named Lyon College 16th among the country’s most-selective universities for the greatest economic diversity among its students.

The New York Times’ College-Access Index looked at the percentage of students receiving Federal Pell Grants at the country’s 286 most-selective public and private colleges and universities as defined by “Barron’s Profiles of American Colleges.”

Lyon came in at 16th, with 39 percent of freshmen receiving the aid. Lyon also ranked first among the colleges and universities from Arkansas that made the list.

Dr. Melissa Taverner (pictured below), president, said Lyon College takes immense pride in being ranked high for its economic diversity among students.

“This recognition underscores our commitment to fostering an accessible educational environment where diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences enrich the learning journey for everyone,” Dr. Taverner said. “It’s a testament to our dedication to providing equal access to higher education and empowering students from all walks of life to achieve their full potential.”

Dr. Kurt Grafton, provost, agreed.

“Inclusion in the New York Times College-Access Index reaffirms our dedication to high-quality academics as a cornerstone of accessible education, empowering students to excel regardless of their background or circumstances,” Grafton said. “Our goal is to ensure that financial barriers do not hinder talented students from achieving their academic aspirations.”

Tommy Newton, vice president for enrollment management, said Lyon College’s commitment to providing financial assistance has enabled countless students to access a world-class education and fulfill their academic potential.

“The college remains dedicated to the goal of providing an accessible education, and this recognition only further motivates our financial aid and admissions team to continue our efforts to make a high-quality education attainable for all,” Newton said.

Lyon College recently announced a 19 percent growth in enrollment for the fall 2023 semester and a 65 percent increase in first-time college students from fall 2022. College administrators say this semester marks the largest year-over-year freshman enrollment increase in 14 years.

In addition to a robust financial aid program, Lyon College maintains outstanding scholarship support from generous benefactors whose philanthropic contributions have paved the way for countless students to pursue higher education.

“Our donors’ generous support in providing scholarships to students is the embodiment of our collective belief in the transformative power of education, said Dr. David Hutchison, vice president for advancement. “Their contributions not only fund dreams but also ignite a ripple effect of opportunities and successes, lighting the path towards a brighter future for countless deserving individuals.”
