Izard County authorities are investigating the Sunday afternoon death of a 1-year-old as an accident.

According to the Izard County Sheriff’s Office, dispatch received a call about a child being struck by a vehicle in the 3900 block of Lunenburg Road, outside of Melbourne, just before 3 p.m.

Izard County sheriff’s deputies, along with Melbourne first responders, Vital Link, and Survival Flight, responded to the scene, but life-saving efforts were performed to “no avail,” the sheriff’s office said.

No foul play is suspected, and authorities say the incident is being investigated as an accident.

The sheriff’s department said no names will be released at this time.
