Obitaury: Ewell Edward Davis

Ewell Edward Davis of Newport, Arkansas, departed this life on Saturday, February 24, 2024, at the age of 90. He was born October 13, 1933, in Sidney, Arkansas, the son of Carl and Marie (Hollandsworth) Davis.
Mr. Ewell Edward Davis graduated from Bradford High School and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Central Baptist College. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War.

Mr. Davis and Miss Shirley Harris were married on December 3, 1953. They were happily married for almost 70 years, raising two children, later enjoying spending time with their granddaughter, and their three great-granddaughters.

Upon his return from military service, Mr. Davis began teaching Junior High Math and Social Studies for the Newport and Tuckerman School Districts. He then worked alongside his wife for over 42 years. First as co-owner and operator of Davis IGA for 27 years, retiring in 2000. After retiring from the grocery business, Mr. and Mrs. Davis began traveling all over the country delivering ambulances for Taylor Made Ambulance until 2015.

He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church.

Mr. Davis was a man of few words, but when he spoke, everyone listened. He enjoyed smoking meats, gardening, and growing delicious tomatoes. He was an incredible, loving husband, dad, and Papa.

Mr. Davis was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Shirley (Harris) Davis; one sister, Gladys Ashcraft; one half-sister, Reba Ussery; and his parents.

He is survived by his son, Shane Davis, and wife, Annette, of Jonesboro; his daughter, Debbie Davis Jones and husband, Scott of Newport; one grandchild, Lori Adams and husband, Ken of Jonesboro; three great-grandchildren, Chloe Hopkins, Rylee Hopkins, and Maggie Adams, all of Jonesboro; one half-sister, Carla Logan of Wyoming; several nieces and nephews, and a lifetime of friends.

Friends may visit the funeral home on Thursday, February 29, 2024, beginning at 9:30 a.m. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Jackson’s Newport Funeral Home Chapel, with interment in Watson Cemetery.

Those honored to serve as pallbearers are Shane Davis, Scott Jones, Rickey Harris, Ken Adams, Chad Hopkins, and Zach Harris.
