The Independence County Library is offering a free workshop on Sept. 25 to help residents navigate rising food costs.
“Planning Meals on a Budget,” led by Independence County Extension Agent Julian Carpenter, will equip attendees with practical strategies to maximize their grocery dollars.
The workshop starts at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 25, and is open to the public. With food prices continuing to climb, organizers emphasize the importance of meal planning to avoid waste, extend ingredients, and ensure balanced, nutritious meals.
Citing a 2023 survey, the library highlights that the average U.S. household spends nearly $6,000 annually on groceries. Proper meal planning, they say, can reduce this by up to 30%, translating to potential savings of $1,800 per year.
“This workshop is ideal for individuals and families looking to manage rising food costs without sacrificing nutrition,” the library said in a release.
