Scots baseball falls to Hendrix College
The Lyon College baseball Scots fell to the visiting Hendrix College Warriors 9-5 on Wednesday night at Fred Wann Field in Batesville.
The Scots (18-17) trailed 2-0 after Hendrix scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning of the non-conference contest. Lyon College scored in the bottom of the fifth inning when Walker Smith moved up on a failed pick-off attempt by the Hendrix pitcher and Slade Inman scored.
The Scots tied the game 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning when Slade Inman singled through the right side to score Braden Bramlett.
Hendrix added a single run in the top of the seventh and another run in the top of the eighth to lead 4-2.
In the top of the ninth, the Warriors scored five times on four walks, one base hit, and a throwing error by Lyon College, to lead 9-2.
In the bottom of the ninth, Ashton Compton doubled to left-center field to bring in Eli Marcotte, and Bramlett hit a two-run homer over the left field wall to score Compton and make it 9-5 before the last out was recorded.
In the game, Landon Swallow improved his hitting streak to 10 straight hits.
Brayden Anderson suffered the loss for the Scots on the mound. Tyler Davis started the game and went 3.2 innings, giving up five hits, two runs, and three strikeouts.
Anderson pitched 2.2 innings and gave up two hits and one run with two strikeouts. Parker Paschal came in for 1.0 inning and gave up an unearned run and walked one. Kenny Jennings pitched .2 innings and allowed a run, walked two, and struck out one. Colton Will pitched 1.0 inning and gave up one hit, four runs, one of which was earned, walked three batters, and struck out one.
The Scots return to action with a SLIAC doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Fred Wann Field for Senior Day, beginning at 12 p.m.
Scots baseball splits doubleheader with Blackburn
The Lyon College baseball Scots split a SLIAC doubleheader with the Blackburn Beavers last Friday afternoon at Fred Wann Field in Batesville.
The Scots (18-16, 7-7) lost the first game to Blackburn 6-3 and won the second game in seven innings 12-2.
In game one, Blackburn led 1-0 after the top of the first inning, but the Scots came back to score a run in the bottom of the second game. With two outs, Caleb Collins beat out a bunt single and Landon Swallow singled down the third base line.
Andrew James was hit by a pitch to load the bases, then Eli Marcotte walked to bring in Collins and tie the game at 1-1.
Blackburn added two runs in the top of the fourth to lead 3-1.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Braden Hendrix singled up the middle with one out, but was caught stealing for the second out of the inning. Kooper McCoy doubled to right field, and a pitch hit Braden Bramlett. Ashton Compton singled through the left side, and McCoy scored to make it 3-2.
Blackburn added another run at the top of the fourth to increase its lead by two runs.
In the bottom of the sixth, Swallow tripled to center field and James singled him in to make it 4-3.
Blackburn added two more runs in the top of the eighth to lead 6-3. Conrad Muir suffered the loss for the Scots from the mound. He pitched four innings, gave up four hits and three runs, walked one, and struck out one. Taylor Conner came in for 3.2 innings and gave up six hits and three runs, while striking out two batters. Kenny Jennings came in for the last 1.1 innings and struck out one batter.
In the second game, Lyon College scored six times in the bottom of the first inning.
Marcotte led off the bottom of the first inning by reaching on an error. McCoy doubled to left field to score Marcotte, then Compton doubled to right center to bring in McCoy. A pitch hit Bramlett, then Hendrix beat out a bunt single to load the bases. That set up a two-run single from Swallow, then Walker Smith singled up the middle to bring in Swallow and Hendrix for a 6-0 lead.
The Scots added another run in the bottom of the second when McCoy led off with a long single to left field, and with one out, Bramlett singled to left field to score McCoy to make it 7-0.
Blackburn scored a run in the top of the third inning, but the Scots got a solo homer to left field from McCoy to make it an 8-1 Lyon College lead in the bottom of the fourth.
Blackburn added another run in the top of the fifth, but the Scots answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth. Swallow walked, then Smith singled to left field. With two outs, Smith advanced to third on a throwing error by the Blackburn pitcher, and Swallow scored on the play to make it 9-2.
In the bottom of the sixth, Bramlett doubled down the left field line and advanced to third on a throwing error by Blackburn. Hendrix grounded out to short, but Bramlett scored on the play to make it 10-2 Scots.
Finally, in the bottom of the seventh inning, Garrett Graef walked with one out and advanced to third base on a wild pitch. Marcotte doubled to right-center field to score Graef, and Marcotte advanced to third on a wild pitch. McCoy walked to put runners at the corners, then Compton singled up the middle to walk off the game and score Marcotte for a 12-2 win.
Patrick Babcock was the winning pitcher for the Scots. He went five innings, gave up four hits and two runs, while striking out five and walking four. Parker Paschal came in and pitched two innings and had two strikeouts.
Scots sweep doubleheader from Champion Christian
The Lyon College Scots baseball team defeated Champion Christian 8-3 and 14-5 on Tuesday, April 14, at Fred Wann Field in a non-conference doubleheader.
The Scots (17-15, 6-6) trailed 1-0 after the top of the first inning, but took the lead in the bottom of the first when Kooper McCoy singled up the middle to score Eli Marcotte. Ashton Compton hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring in Braden Hendrix, and Slade Inman hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring in McCoy for a 3-1 Lyon College lead.
In the bottom of the second inning, Hendrix doubled to left field to score Marcotte, and McCoy singled to left center to bring in Hendrix for a 5-1 Lyon College lead.
Champion Christian scored two runs in the top of the third to close the gap to 5-3.
In the bottom of the fifth, Landon Swallow doubled down the left field line to score Inman, Marcotte reached first on an error that allowed Swallow to score, and Hendrix singled to left field to bring in Marcotte and make it an 8-3 Scots lead.
Aiden Connolly (5-1) went the distance in the first game. He pitched seven innings and allowed four hits and three runs. He walked four and struck out four of the 31 batters he faced.
In the second game, Champion Christian scored four runs in the top of the first inning.
Lyon College came back to get one run in the bottom half of the first when a pitch with the bases loaded hit Inman, and Marcotte scored to make it 4-1.
Champion Christian added another run at the top of the second to go up 5-1, but the Scots came back to tie the game in the bottom half of the second.
Hendrix beat out an infield single to score Swallow, and Braden Bramlett hit a sacrifice fly to left field to bring in Andrew James. Hendrix advanced to second on a wild pitch that allowed Marcotte to score, then Compton singled to left-center to score Hendrix and tie the game 5-5.
In the bottom of the fourth, Logan Lightner drew a bases-loaded walk to score McCoy, then James tripled to right field to score Bramlett, Compton, and Lightner. McCoy singled up the middle to bring in James and Macotte to make it an 11-15 Scots lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, Swallow reached on a fielder’s choice that scored Compton, then Swallow advanced to third on a wild pitch and Lightner scored on the play. Marcotte then hit a sacrifice fly to right field to bring in Swallow for a 14-5 Lyon College lead.
Braden Anderson started on the mound for the Scots and went one inning. He allowed four hits and four runs. Colton Will, who got the win (1-0), came in to pitch the next three innings, and he allowed two hits and one run. Parker Paschal came in for two innings of work and allowed only one hit and struck out two batters, while walking three. Carter Sprague pitched the seventh inning and didn’t allow a hit or a run from the three batters he faced.
Scots softball sweeps Hendrix College in Conway
CONWAY, Ark. – The Lyon College Softball Scots swept a non-conference doubleheader at Hendrix College on Monday night, April 21, at Warrior Field.
The Scots (11-25, 5-9) defeated Hendrix 4-3 in the first game and took eight innings to defeat the Warriors 9-6 in the second game.
At the top of the first inning of Game 1, Sophie Varela led off with a single to right field, and Anna Voth bunted her to second base. MK Duffield doubled to left center field, and Olivia Orf singled up the middle to bring in Varela for a 1-0 Lyon College lead.
Hendrix came back in the bottom of the first inning to score three runs.
The score stayed 3-1 until the top of the sixth inning when Duffield led off with a solo homer to right-center field. Orf followed with a single to right-center, and Skylar Foreman singled to center field. Brianna Morquecho reached on a fielder’s choice that advanced pinch runner Gabby Thomas to third base. With two outs, Thomas scored on a wild pitch to tie the game 3-3.
In the top of the seventh inning, Voth walked with one out, and with two outs, Orf singled to center field to score Voth from second base for a 4-3 lead.
Hendrix had two runners on with one out, but a fly out to center field and a ground out ended the game.
Sydney Lasher picked up the win for the Scots. She went seven innings, gave up 12 hits and three runs, while striking out five.
In the second game, Hendrix led 1-0 after the bottom of the first inning, but Lyon College scored five times in the top of the third. With one out, Varela singled to left field, Voth singled, and Duffield had a base hit to center field to load the bases. Orf reached on a fielder’s choice that scored Varela, and with two outs, Foreman singled to the right side to score Voth.
That set up an inside-the-park home run from Morquecho where Orf and Foreman scored ahead of her to make it 5-1.
With one out in the top of the sixth inning, Varela singled to left field, and Voth reached on an error. Duffield advanced them both up a base with a grounder to second base, then Varela scored on a wild pitch for a 6-1 lead.
Hendrix made it 6-2 in the bottom of the fourth and tied the game in the bottom of the fifth.
The game stayed tied until the top of the eighth inning. Ohnrie Bergman was placed at second base to start the top of the eighth, and Fallon Lancaster singled to left field. With one out, Voth singled to left field to score Bergman. Duffield grounded out to first base to push Soni Beene and Voth up a base. Orf followed with a single to right field to bring in Voth and Beene, and Foreman singled for a 9-6 Scots lead.
Hendrix went down in order in the bottom of the eighth.
Madison DeRoussel started the game in the circle for the Scots and went 3.1 innings, giving up eight hits and two runs with one strikeout. She was relieved by Ashley Abel, who pitched 1.1 innings and gave up four hits and four runs. Lasher came back in for the second game to pitch 3.1 innings and didn’t allow a hit or a run, and picked up her fourth win of the season.
Scots softball drops doubleheader at Fontbonne
ST. ANN, Mo. — The Lyon College softball Scots dropped a doubleheader at Fontbonne 5-3 and 8-1 on Friday afternoon, April 18, in St. Ann, Missouri.
The Scots (9-25, 5-9) fell behind 4-0 in the first game before Rebecca Rodriguez hit a pop-up to second base, and Olivia Orf scored on an error by the Fontbonne second baseman in the top of the sixth inning.
The Scots came back in the top of the seventh inning when MK Duffield doubled to left field and Sydney Lasher scored on the play. Olivia Orf singled to right field to bring in Anna Voth to make it 5-3.
Georgia Holzer was the losing pitcher for Lyon College in Game 1.
In the second game, Fontbonne led 2-0 when the Scots scored at the top of the third inning.
Rodriguez homered to left field to start the top of the third, and Sophie Varela doubled to left center field. Voth singled to left field, and Varela advanced to third base with two outs.
Fontbonne scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and added one run in the bottom of the sixth.
Sydney Lasher picked up the loss in the second game, with Madison DeRoussel and Ashley Abel coming in to pitch as the game continued.
