Tommy “Sonny” Harper, Sr., 81 years of age, passed and entered into rest on August 10, 2025, in Batesville, Arkansas, surrounded by family.

He was born on September 5, 1943, in Batesville, Arkansas, to the late James Harper and Geraldine “Taylor” Harper. A lifelong resident of Batesville, he dedicated over 25 years of service to the Arkansas Highway Department as a rest area attendant.

A man of faith, Tommy attended the AME Church in Batesville. In his youth, he loved playing basketball and, throughout his life, remained an avid NBA fan. His days were often filled with fishing, gardening, washing cars until they shined, caring for his lawn and rental properties, and traveling to visit family. He had a passion for barbecuing, entertaining loved ones, and sharing his wife’s banana pudding and a good pecan pie. His home was always a place of laughter, good food, and warm gatherings. Above all, Tommy’s greatest joy was his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Robert; his daughter, Yvette; seven sisters, Catherine, Theodora, Ruthie, Faye, Opal, Margaret and Shirley; and four brothers, Charlie, GeRoy “Bub,” John Doe, and James Sr.

Tommy leaves to treasure his memory his devoted wife of 55 years, Betty “Barris” Harper; his son, Tommy (Robin) Harper, Jr.; his daughter, Cecilia Smith; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; his sister, Leona Neely; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

The Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Willis Funeral Service in Batesville, Arkansas. Honorary pallbearers will be all Harper, Sanders, Washington, and Neely nephews.

Tommy will be remembered for his warm spirit, tireless work ethic, and the way he made every person feel like family. His life was a true testament to faith, family, and the simple joys that make a life rich. The memory of his smile, his work-worn hands, and his welcoming spirit will live on forever in the hearts of those who loved him.
