The Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration is warning residents about a new wave of scam text messages falsely claiming the agency is trying to send refunds to individuals’ bank accounts.
According to the department, a significant number of reports have poured in today about the fraudulent texts — the latest version of a scam that has already targeted thousands of Arkansans.
“The Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration will never text you seeking your bank account details,” spokesperson Scott Hardin said. “Scammers are continually updating this text and trying new versions to steal Arkansans’ hard-earned money.”
A previous version of the scam circulated for months, claiming recipients owed money for a traffic ticket or toll. That text warned that a vehicle’s registration would be canceled if payment was not made immediately.
State officials are urging Arkansans not to respond to suspicious messages and to delete any texts claiming to be from the Department of Finance and Administration.
