A contractor struck a gas line Monday, forcing emergency crews to shut down a section of West Ross Street for several hours, officials said.

The leak prompted a large response from the Batesville Fire Department, police, the Arkansas Department of Transportation and Summit Utilities. Crews closed West Ross Street from Central Avenue to Baker Street while workers contained the leak and vented the line. The area was cleared and reopened at about 5 p.m., Fire Chief Mark McCollum said. No injuries were reported.

McCollum said the gas line was hit while SDT Telecom was boring under the roadway. The company has been hired by AT&T to install fiber-optic cable throughout the city.
