Buddy Ray Bolin, a longtime Mountain View businessman whose hardware store served generations of residents and whose civic involvement spanned decades, died Jan. 3 in Conway. He was 88.

Bolin was best known as the owner of Modern Builders Hardware Store, which he operated for 40 years. Known for his long hours and willingness to help customers whenever needed, Bolin frequently opened the store on Sundays to ensure residents could make urgent repairs.

Born July 8, 1937, Bolin was the twin brother of Nina Fay. He graduated as valedictorian of Newark High School’s Class of 1956 with a 3.97 grade-point average and played on the school’s basketball team. He later attended Lyon College.

Bolin was an active member of the School Avenue Church of Christ, where he served as an elder for many years. His community involvement also included the Lions Club, Optimist Club, and the Chamber of Commerce, where he served two terms as president. Most recently, he served on the board of Stone Bank.

Known for his humor and outgoing personality, Bolin was named an Outstanding Citizen in 2005 and led the Bean Festival Parade, riding through town in his Ford Bronco.

After completing 36 college credit hours, Bolin worked for JK Southerland Poultry Company in Mountain View. He also served in the Arkansas Army National Guard from 1957 to 1965, including one year at Fort Bragg.

A celebration of life service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, at the School Avenue Church of Christ in Mountain View.
