Batesville firefighters responded to the city’s first structure fire of 2026 early Tuesday, containing heavy fire and limiting damage to a residence on North Central Avenue.

The Batesville Fire Department’s B Shift was dispatched at 5:50 a.m. to the 1500 block of North Central Avenue after a neighbor reported fire coming from the rear of a house. Crews arrived to find heavy fire at the back of the home and in the attic.

Firefighters conducted a quick interior search for victims before pulling the ceiling to access the attic fire. Crews successfully extinguished the fire and prevented it from spreading further into the residence.

No injuries were reported. Fire officials said about 80% of the home was saved, with damage largely confined to the rear of the structure and minor smoke damage elsewhere.

The response included four on-duty firefighters, four off-duty firefighters and two volunteers.
