Fire destroys home on East Main Street in Mountain View

A Mountain View family lost their home Tuesday evening in a fire that was complicated by fireworks detonating inside the structure, fire officials said. No injuries were reported, and the family cat was later found safe.

The Mountain View Fire Department was dispatched to the residence at 2300 Highway 14, also known as East Main Street, at 6:23 p.m. Jan. 20. Personnel arrived on the scene within seconds, and the first fire engines arrived minutes later, according to a statement from the fire department.

A team of 18 firefighters used three engines, two brush trucks, and a rescue unit to battle the blaze. While crews established a water supply quickly, fire officials said their suppression efforts were hindered by fireworks going off inside the home. Photos shared on social media during the incident showed the pyrotechnics igniting as the fire spread.

The home was a total loss. A neighboring residence sustained heat damage to its siding, but was otherwise spared.

Late Tuesday night, firefighters confirmed they had located the family’s cat unharmed.

Crews remained on the scene for several hours, clearing the area shortly after midnight. Fire officials are asking the public to stay off the property at the homeowner’s request.
